Life as a Divemaster Intern on Gili Air

A Day in the Life of a Divemaster Intern

A Divemaster internship is more than professional training. At Oceans 5 Gili Air, you’ll experience daily dive-center life, spend regular time in the water, learn from experienced professionals and assist with dive operations. Each day can vary depending on the weather, dive schedule, training needs and center activities.

A Typical Day at Oceans 5

There is no single schedule that every intern follows.

Your daily routine will depend on your training stage, the dive center’s schedule, booked trips, weather and operational needs.

Learn Through
Real Dive Centre Experience

One of the most important parts of your internship is practical experience.

Instead of spending your entire internship in a classroom, you become familiar with the daily activities involved in running a professional dive operation.

You may learn how to:

Your responsibilities can increase as your knowledge, skills and confidence develop.

Training in the Pool

Oceans 5 has two training pools where you can practise and develop diving skills in a controlled environment.

Pool sessions can be useful for refining techniques, working on specific skills and preparing for open-water activities.

The controlled environment allows you to focus on technique and receive feedback before applying your skills in the ocean.

Regular Diving Experience

Your internship includes unlimited diving.

Interns typically make around 1.5 dives per day on average, depending on conditions, training activities and the dive centre’s schedule.

The actual schedule depends on factors such as:

The purpose of regular diving is to give you opportunities to practise your skills and become increasingly comfortable in professional diving situations.

Time on the Boats

Oceans 5 operates three dive boats, giving interns experience with the practical side of boat-based diving.

Before each trip, preparation is important.

On the boats, you’ll learn about:

Being involved in these activities helps you understand that professional diving involves much more than being underwater.

Learn From
Your Divemaster Mentor

Throughout your internship, you can receive guidance from your personal Divemaster mentor.

Your mentor can help you understand your progress, identify areas for improvement and become more comfortable with professional responsibilities.

Feedback is an important part of the learning process.

You will have opportunities to ask questions, discuss your experiences and learn from situations you encounter during the internship.

Working With
Instructors

An active dive center gives you the opportunity to observe how instructors work with divers.

You can learn from how instructors:

Observing experienced professionals can help you understand the role of a Divemaster and the expectations of working in the diving industry.

Learn to Deliver
Dive Briefings

Communication is an important Divemaster skill.

During your internship, you can develop your understanding of how professional dive briefings are structured and delivered.

You can learn how to communicate information about:

With practice and feedback, you can become more confident communicating with different types of divers.

Build Awareness
Underwater

A professional Divemaster needs to pay attention to more than their own diving.

During your internship, you can develop your awareness of the divers around you and the environment in which you are diving.

This includes learning to observe:

These skills develop through practice, observation and experience.

Life Between
Dives

Being an intern does not mean spending every minute at the dive center.

There will be periods between dives and training when you can enjoy your own time.

On Gili Air, you can:

Relax on the beach

Explore the island

Cycle around the island

Visit cafés and restaurants

Meet other divers

Spend time with fellow interns

Enjoy the sunset

Rest and prepare for the next day

Finding a good balance between training and personal time can make your internship more enjoyable and sustainable.

Equipment for Your
Internship

Equipment rental is included during the internship. See what’s included in the internship price for the full cost breakdown.

You will become familiar with preparing, checking and handling diving equipment as part of your daily activities.

However, you should also begin building your own professional equipment setup.

Having your own essential equipment is an important step toward working independently as a dive professional.
